Default A new possible scam?

The following occured to me yesterday in the Gate of Pain area. Someone PM'ed me and carried out a conversation that went like this:

Guy: "Hey, nice armor"
Me: "Thanks"
Guy: <some questions about how to obtain it>
Guy: "Hey, why don't we compare weapons. I want to see what you have"

This request is unusual, to say the least.

Guy: "Show me everything that you have"

Scam-sense is ringing now. He then proceeds to show me 7 random weapons of low value. I'm cautious, so I put one of my secondary weapons in the trade window. It's customized

Guy: "Hmm, do you have any other weapons? What about shields, show me what shield you're using"

I recall reading about a possible exploit that allowed someone to complete a trade without the other party accepting, though I can't remember if it was confirmed. Him asking to see my shield, a non-customizable item, sounded even more fishy. I show him my collectors shield that I have on Koss.

Guy: "Oh, nothing else? No greens?"
Me: [Lie] "Nope, sorry"
Guy: "Oh, ok then. I gotta go, later"

Anyone else encounter this? I'm not certain if he was a scammer or just someone with a very inquisitive nature.

Sounds just like die hard weopon camparison junkie... I dont believe i have heard of a scam allowing people to complete a trade without your consent. And im sure that would have made big news had it been true.

Yeah, it's the dreaded "Please hit the accept button now" scam. You were lucky you got out of it when you did.

and I don't think those copy programs people used to run in diablo work on GW were someone can see the item you have and then duplicate it.

I haven't had anyone ask to see my weapons yet... then again... I don't have any good ones haha...

There was a mod in diablo 2 called tradehack that made you forceaccept... this could be something similar.

Obviously if it worked in Diablo it could happen here.

And people wonder why in game I ignore everyone and only talk to guildies. Even if this was no big deal, scammers out number honest players in game at least 10 to 1 IMHO.

*nod* The exact reason why I leave every chat off but guild. I'm either with guildies or heroes/henchies so I don't even have to have team on most of the time.

Seems like an honest request to me. The guy/girl noticed the nice armor (15k?) and thought you might have some nice weapons to match.

Remember GW is suppose to be hack proof..

seems like the op is being a little too cautious. if hackers could somehow steal weapons that are in the trade window without both parties clicking on the accept button, im sure there would have been a thread about it in the forums. ive shown random people armor, and weapons if they ask. havent had any of my items magically disappear while in the trade window.

Things like this are all server side on GW.

So it couldn't happen, I don't think.

I think that you did the right thing, beign cautious and all. I myself haven't heard of any hacks yet that do as the others say, but even I am very careful when I trade.

I doubt scammers outnumber legit players. In fact I would suspect there is one scammer in less than several thousand legit players. But they stand out in memory.

Negative experiences always stand out in memory, and it is human nature to form stereotypes around them and assume others of the same nature as the negative are similar.

It was probably just an interested player, if you had some magic hack to get items from a trade, would you either:

a - pm random guyi n good armour asking to see his weapon

or

b - go to somewhere people trade and find someone selling something guaranteed to be valuable?

I'm careful with showing valuable weapons and other items in the trade window just out of fear I may click on Accept accidently.
